The colleges offering these programs look for students who have a strong business background and a degree in either business or education. The program prepares student to lead and educate others in the future.

Courses in the Program

Most programs of this type require the completion of 30 credit hours or more for graduation. Students usually take a combination of both business and education courses that give them a better understanding of both subjects before giving those students access to business education courses. Even if you plan to teach at the college level, you might find that you need to take a course on teaching high school or junior high school students. Students will also take specialized courses on the technology or ethics or business and problems found in the business world.

Is a Thesis Required?

Though a thesis is usually a required part of a graduate degree program, it isn’t usually a requirement to earn a Master’s in Education in Business Education. Instead of doing a thesis, you typically need to complete a student teaching experience at a local school. After observing the teacher in charge of that classes for a few weeks, you will lead the class yourself for the remainder of the semester. Some programs use a seminar in lieu of a student teaching experience. A seminar is a long and in-depth course that you take that deals with a specific topic. You’ll use the knowledge you obtain in that class to complete a research paper or project on the same topic.

Where Can You Work?

With a Master’s in Education in Business Education, you can teach at both the higher and lower levels. Many students later teach business courses at community colleges and vocational schools, but you may also work as an adjunct professor or part-time professor at a university. Some business education students choose to teach at the high school or middle school level. While not many middle schools or junior highs offer business classes, many high schools offer introductory courses and more advanced courses for upperclassmen. Business education students also have the option of teaching in adult education programs and teaching courses to small business owners.

How Much Will You Make?

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, post-secondary teachers make a median wage of $68,970 a year. The post-secondary level includes teaching at the community college and university levels. The BLS also estimates that the post-secondary field will add more than 236,000 new teaching positions, which equates to a rate of growth of 19 percent. This is a faster growth rate than the average national rate of growth found across teaching positions and other fields. Though it does include all post-secondary teaching positions, you should see a rise in the number of business teaching positions available.
