Students often assume that they qualify for teaching positions and few other jobs, but this isn’t actually true. There is a difference between a Master’s in Education and a Master’s in Education with an emphasis on teaching. Regardless of which program you choose, you qualify for positions in and outside of academia.

Teaching Jobs

The types of jobs with a Master’s in Education in Secondary Education that are available for college graduates do include a number of teaching jobs. In the United States, secondary school can refer to middle school, high school or a combination of both, and it usually includes students as young as fifth grade and as high as those enrolled in their senior year of high school. Depending on the specialty or concentration that you choose, you might seek work as a math, science or humanities teacher at the upper elementary school level, in a local middle school or junior high or in a high school.

Curriculum Development

Many schools offer programs and classes for those with special needs, and you’ll have the chance to work with those students as you teach them basic educational and life skills. If the schools in your area don’t offer these programs, you might consider working at a special needs school. These schools need educators trained in working with children with specific developmental problems and those capable of working with students of a certain age.

Management Jobs

The majority of students enrolled in graduate education programs take courses to prepare them for working as principals and superintendents. A principal is responsible for hiring new teachers, ensuring that the school runs effectively and disciplining students when needed. Superintendents typically have more responsibilities and work with all schools located within the district. They handle budget problems, work with the teachers, coaches and principals to keep various programs on track and keep the district running smoothly throughout the year. While some superintendent and principal positions require a doctoral degree, many are available to those with a master’s degree.

Not everyone who enrolls in a master level education program dreams of working closely with students and helping those students prepare for the future.
