International Teaching JobsIf you’re interested in both teaching and traveling, you may be wondering if there are any jobs in education that are international and would let you experience different cultures. Thankfully, there are actually a few options that are probably available to you. For instance, you could teach English abroad, work at an international boarding school or volunteer with an organization like the Peace Corps.

Teach English Abroad

In many countries, you can teach English as a native speaker without majoring in education in college; however, it would be a good idea to get TEFL, or Teaching English as a Foreign Language, certification. Generally, this certification only takes 100 to 120 hours of training, which means that you could be qualified for jobs in education that are international within a month. After you get certified, consider where you want to teach. Some countries will pay you extremely well, and others won’t. You could end up just being able to barely make ends meet, or you could end up coming back to the United States with quite a bit of savings. Since most teaching abroad opportunities only last for a school year, don’t count out low-paying countries – try going to a country to become fluent in another language or to visit somewhere that you’ve always wanted to see.

International Boarding School

There are quite a few jobs in education that are international, but you might find that teaching at an international boarding school is right for you. This is a great option if you want to teach abroad but don’t want to be stuck just teaching English. By searching for jobs at international boarding schools, you should be able to find teaching jobs in subjects like music, math, science and history – whatever your forte is, you should be able to find work that you find enjoyable. Depending on the size of the school, you might be asked to do more than one thing – small schools might ask teachers to teach more than one subject or more than one grade, for example. Teachers may also be asked to double as houseparents for their students.

Peace Corps

Even if joining the Peace Corps might not technically count as a job, it’s really volunteering after all, it still deserves mention in any list of jobs in education that are international. You’ll be given enough money to live on while you’re teaching abroad, and you’ll earn a little over $5,000 for when you come back to the United States. Volunteers typically serve for around two years. Math and science teachers will need to have taken corresponding courses in college, but liberal arts majors can still qualify to teach English. To be accepted into the Peace Corps as a teacher, it’s a good idea to get some volunteer experience by tutoring kids while in college. Depending on where you want to serve, you may also need to have Spanish or French language skills.
