To be able to counsel students at college, you must obtain a Master’s Degree, either a university or at an online program. On average, you will need 60 hours of credits to get a certificate. Most educational institutions will require guidance counselors to obtain certification before they can be hired. To be eligible for certification, you will have to complete your Master’s course and then pass the board exams.

Most schools, from primary grade to college are required to have a guidance counselor on their campus or college grounds. This ensures that most Master’s graduates will have employment after taking the degree.

In this career path, you may counsel individuals or groups. Group therapy sessions have a moderator who is usually a professional counselor. This requires you to provide psychotherapy to your patients but does not give you the right to prescribe medication for mental health patients.

You can also choose to offer your services to those with drug and alcohol dependency. This may mean working at a rehab center, at a school campus or putting up your own private practice.

Another career path for someone with a Masters in School Counseling is to offer your guidance and advice to families or couples with problems. This can include marriage counseling or helping families with child-parent issues.
